The theme of this session was “Be not afraid…” a recurring phrase in the Biblical Old and New Testaments. The four artists engage with this theme from very different experiences: Ernest Mancoba (1904-2004) from colonized South Africa; James Hampton (1909-1964) who experienced the Great Migration and pulled from Caribbean, African and Christian traditions; an illustration by the eccentric British Romantic poet/artist William Blake (1757-1827) in the post Napoleonic period and the Dutch expressionist artist Jacoba van Heemskerck (1876-1923) whose painting dates to World War I.
